In some ways, this is what Deepika Padukone meant when she gave a fitting reply to Swara Bhaskar’s open letter (read: baseless rant) on that jauhar scene in ‘Padmaavat’. Gone are the days when Deepika would have gotten bitchy and told Swara to get a box of condoms! Obviously, we are making light of the situation, but when Deepika was asked about, it was clear that she thought Swara was trying to bask in the glory that this film has got. She was stealing their thunder and Deepika knew it.
Here’s what Deepika had to say when asked about Swara’s rants:
She probably missed the disclaimer at the beginning of the film. You probably went out to buy some popcorn and missed the initial disclaimers that come out. I think, secondly, the fact that it is important to view a film in totality and to see in which period it was set in. Third of all, I think for me this film is not just about the act (jauhar) that they all committed, but it stood for so much more. For me, it’s a celebration of women and their strength, power and dignity.
The fact that Deepika didn’t even bother to get diplomatic and be like, “Oh well, Swara is entitled to her opinion just like every other person, who thought I should be beheaded for playing Padmaavati!”. But she didn’t get diplomatic, which made us think that she was well-aware of the Sonam Kapoor connection that Swara always talks about. Speaking about the I-hate-Deepika-Padukone-club, look at one of Swara’s quotes we found, which was some time back:
First of all, why in the world would she think that? As if Deepu is sitting around analysing people’s level of success!
In our head, it sounded like Deepu was telling Swara to STFU and enjoy the film! And also, mind your own business.
Back to Swara, we wished we could have respected her a little for voicing her opinion like this, but we can’t. We’ll tell you why (by numbering our points):
-
She could have waited to rant her opinions like this since the whole world and their aunties know the struggle that Bhansali and his crew went through to get this film released.
-
She could have called him since she claims she knows him personally. If she didn’t have her number, she could have asked her bestie, Sonam.
-
She belongs to the same industry as these people and as a sign of respect because of what the film had to go through, she could have spoken out about what she felt was wrong in her upcoming interviews with Rajeev Masand or Anupama Chopra or on some other platform. In other words, she could have spoken out after giving the film time to breath in theatres!
-
A glance on her Twitter timeline and you will see how she is fanatically retweeting all those, who agree with her. This is a huge indication that she did this to gain attention and not to bring attention to what she was trying to blame SLB for.
-
She’s calling everyone, who doesn’t agree with her as trolls. Is troll the new word used to describe people with common sense?
-
She claimed that people are getting upset and mad at her open letter because she used the word “Vagina” many times. Maybe she did use this word to get people mad because if this is how she sees it, then we can all assume that Swara Bhaskar sees the world in a different light. For the record, no one cared about the number of times she used “Vagina” in her content. In fact, the men are pissed that not enough “Penis” was addressed in the Open Letter. Maybe time for another open letter, Swara. What say?
Point is, she wanted to vent out her anger at SLB, but the fact that she is still sitting on this, searching about positive responses to her open letter and then retweeting those responses and also retweeting responses to her pretty much shows what her true intentions are. It’s sad that she had to resort to this to be noticed. She should have employed the same tactic to promote her films. At least, people would have appreciated it then! Now, all she has become is a publicity hungry actress!
On a lighter note, while viewing one of her videos, we found this video being advertised on youtube:
Very honestly, tell us you didn’t think what we thought when we saw the headline and the accompanying photo? Speaking of Bollywood’s Ultimate Godfather, why didn’t Swara blast him when he compared himself to a raped woman? All those rape examples she used in her open letter to SLB would have been fitting to be used in this context as a reply to him.
Swara Bhaskar was once a good actor. Now all she does is try and gain attention by baseless rants. And while being a free speech champion, keep others with differing opinion as trolls. Smh.
Woow Admin i again agree with you 100%. She wanted attention and got it!
I actually have no problem with her writing an open letter, I agree or not with her points.
But the whole purpose of it makes me wanna puke when I think about bw. I mean they all saw what this film went through, yet nitpicking it when it is finally breathing like Rohit Shetty said is absurd.
If she wrote this after the film collected the revenues and away from her releases I would have applauded her, even if I don’t agree with her points.
But the timing, plus the fact that she JUSTIFIED stalking and suicide for Ranjhanna, her own film which is set in contemporary times and giving out wrong ideas is making her look really bad. I didn’t think of Swara in this light. And it’s disappointing. It’s like with each day you’re getting disillusioned by someone from bw.
Padmavati as a film has enabled me to see bw, politicians, common people in a whole different light. I will never be able to look some the same way as I did before, anymore.
I think Swara needs to be able to tell the difference between 13th century practices and modern day practices. She’s literally taking the whiole movie way too seriously. I have a feeling that Sonam probably egged her on to write this when Swara confided her feelings to her. I don’t see Sonam tweeting anything in Swara’s support for this. The truth is that if Sodumb was given this role, she would have literally killed to be cast in it. These nepo kids are getting too much for me.
awesome post..
Good one Admin. I seriously think you should tweet this on Swara’s face.
It’s pointless to send anything across to Swara because she has been acting like Khilji ever since her article came out. So, if you agree with her, she will retweet you and if you don’t, she will call you a troll or someone who can’t take it when Vagina is mentioned. Either way, let her bask in all this glory. Sad that a talented actress like her had to resort to something like this to get noticed. As old people would always say, “Be careful who you hang out with because they are a big influence on you.”
Please stop this witch hunt! Shocked at the venom in your articles – personalized attacks against her! Very disappointed. I get it that you don’t agree with her. I get it that in fact you didn’t understand her message (many of us tried to explain you but no avail). Fair enough. But for God’s sake don’t misuse your platform to mercilessly attack her. Many of us indeed agree with her totally and believe it is you who miss the point between depiction of a tragic act versus celebration and glorification of it; between objective narration versus positive value-judgement of Jauhar so much so as to make it aspirational. Ps:: the role of open letter is not writing a personal letter to someone. It is to bring urgent attention to a burning (pun unintended) topic and in the public domain. Peace
How is this a witch hunt? Are you calling Swara a witch that we need to hunt down? Listen, as a viewer if she had a problem with that scene, she should have contacted SLB and spoken to him about it. Can you honestly tell me that you and Swara know exactly how these women felt when they were going through it? How can you say that they were not celebrating it instead of doing it against their will or making it look like a tragedy? Do you know for sure?
good one admin……it is admirable to keep a cool head and answer…. all these people who get carried away because of some movie scenes are not worth of your time….A movie is STAGED ffs……If a real tragedy like this happens, these same people will either run away or record it on their phones and release it the next day expressing their OUTRAGE!!!! I am seriously done with these online activists…..
Thank you Deepu!! For voicing so articulately what I’m sure many of us feel.
Admin, your reply above made little sense. I cannot even understand it. The victim of every witch hunt is not a witch – it is a turn of phrase.
@askein – I think that line about witch was said in jest 😀
It was a joke! 😉 because they are saying how we don’t understand what Swara wrote, so we went one step further!
@Admin – Hahaha good one
As Admin says Swara should have waited before giving such an opinion or said it to SLB in person. Also why an open letter? Smells like publicity to me. When has she spoken out about real life important issues? Or against the other idiotic stuff that Bollywood churns out or the ridiculous stuff that actors say? Like Salman raped woman comment? Rape is a huge problem in India. Salman has many male fans. He just trivilallised an important issue. Why was she so silent? If you point a finger four others point back at you. Where was her open letter to Salman? As many of us are saying it is just a dumb glamourous movie with all scences over the top as all SLB’s crappy films are.
BTW if live in the western world the word “witch hunt” is a sensitive word particularly to feminists given the history behind it. Ie women considered weak so more likely to be tempted by the devil etc.
Thank you. Really appreciate your comment 🙂 and whole heartedly endorse it. There are also many commentators on social media and mainstream newspapers and channels who are echoing things similar to what swara said with statistics and more coherence.
I reject all the karni sena related violence but i still reserve the right to use my brains to discuss the regressive gender politics of the film.
There is hope yet that the world is not lost to stupidity 🙂
Well said on all points admin! And especially to your 5th point – so true! The word troll is so overused and abused, it’s getting old now. Whenever someone says something logical but you don’t agree with them, they are called a troll! Smh!
Sawara is jealous sonam PR. Where was she when DP was threaten? Why she has no issues with item songs which only objectify women? She is an attention seeker. Not to forget sonam frriend , who couldn’t make it big like DP despite starting with her. Sawara above quote is not here but sonam.
Sonam probably thinks that quote in her head!
Ranveer in an interview said that Swara sent him a text praising his performance in the movie. If she was so disturbed after watching the movie that she had to write an open letter bashing the director and the movie why is she sending texts to one of the lead actor of that ‘regressive movie’ praising him. Along with the director she should blast the actors who acted in such a movie instead she is praising one of the actors.
She did not sent texts to Deepika praising her acting so It is evident what her intentions were when she wrote the letter.
I think Swara wants to act opposite Ranveer.. That’s why those praises…
Aren’t Sonam and Ranveer cousins? Probably Swara was thinking in this angle when she praised him
I dont think Sonam and Ranveer that are close…..
they are not. They are distantly related . But, not close at all. He is close to Arjun.
RS and Sonam are not close. They are third cousins. Sonam in Vogue bff and Ranveer in a print interview both stated that. They were and still are not close buddies nor are the families close.
She most probably wanted to act opposite him.
Agree wholeheartedly to your opinions Admin…
Very good admin u gave a befitting reply to swaras actions
