What Was That: Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas

In this week’s episode of ‘What in the world was that’, ‘Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas’ is the main star!

To be fair, there’s no ‘What in the world was that’ episode on a weekly basis but who knows…

So, ‘Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas’ was finally released on ZEE5 and maybe on other platforms that we don’t know about. Point is, we finally had a chance to dig into this film and boy, was it fun!

    pal-pal

Think about this. We are giving you a sort of review of the film when even top reviewers stayed away from giving their opinion.

‘Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas’ was made by Sunny Deol to launch his son, Karan Deol. Initially, Sunny wanted Amrita Singh’s daughter, Sara Ali Khan, to make her debut in this film as a way to relive his own debut which was alongside Amrita. He wanted to do a remake of his debut film, actually, but that never took off. So he found a new script to launch his son and then after a long wait, he found a girl to act opposite Karan in the film.

Trailer: Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas

How Karan Deol got his big break?

In interviews to promote this film, Karan was asked when he knew he wanted to become an actor. He said after he turned 18, he went to his mom and told her he wants to become an actor. Then he went to his dad and told him the same thing. And that was it!

As a father, Sunny decided to make his son’s wishes come true and produce a film for him. Sunny also directed the film because he wanted to follow the footsteps of his own father Dharmendra who launched him in ‘Betaab’.

You may have heard how Sunny had to get the money to produce this film, including joining politics for this reason only. The film’s budget is 60 crore and it’s due to the locations where Sunny decided to shoot the film. So it’s a lot of money for someone’s debut film and Sunny had to find that dough to produce the film.

How is Karan Deol as an actor?

Alright so, this movie was shot at a budget of 60 crore. At this rate, you would think Sunny would take all the right precautions to make sure the film is perfect. But guess he only depended on the beautiful locations to do the job since Karan appeared NOT to be ready to face the camera at all!

It’s amazing how in today’s day and age, especially with all the talented young actors around, Sunny didn’t think of sending his son to a workshop or get him an acting coach or even get him a voice coach.

Karan’s dialogue delivery is so weak, it’s like listening to Sonam speak but Karan’s tone is like this : —————————————.

Even when he’s mad, he sounds the same. There’s no emotion in his dialogue delivery. If you watched his interviews, he sounds just like that. There’s no difference.

As far as his acting goes, this is what he does in most scenes in this film:

    56

There’s the angry depiction as well, which is also seen in the trailer:

    7

It’s like someone told him to smile a lot because he looks nice smiling and get angry this way like if your blood pressure is rising because that’s his dad’s signature move.

If Karan wants to stay an actor, he needs to work on his skills. Right now, he’s fresh with no idea on how and what to deliver in front of the camera. A lot of people are saying how he’s shy, which is why he is not delivering in front of the camera. But then why did he decide to become an actor? As per Sunny, he didn’t force his son to do something he didn’t want to do. So, what made Karan think like that? It’s a little strange considering how he was kept away from Bollywood. He started appearing here and there when he started working on his family’s film ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana 2′. He must have been living with his mum, who lives in England after she separated from Sunny.

The Deol ladies never appear in public, so it was a surprise that Karan’s mother made an appearance at his first movie screening as did his grandmother.

Back to Karan’s acting skills, he’s probably one of the worst actors in the star kids. Back then, it was probably Fardeen Khan but then with Hrithik coming to the screen, things got much better. Not just Karan’s acting, but even his body language is so frigid that you wonder what in the world is happening here?! He cannot even dance! What happened to taking dance classes? Where is Saroj Khan at?

How is Sahher Bambba as an actor?

Surprisingly, Sahher is quite good in the film. Well, to be fair, she is being compared to Karan’s acting abilities so…She came prepared, obviously. She ain’t no star kid to be able to take things easy. But since Karan is so soft-tone and one-dimension in the film, what she delivers come across as over-acting. She hypes herself up way to much. Think like Anushka Sharma in ‘Jab Tak Hain Jaan’ or Shraddha Kapoor in the films where she’s too loud. Same thing here.

She looks a bit like Tanushree Dutta. She hasn’t signed a second film yet so it will be interesting to see where she goes from here.

    Sunny Deol, as a director

A director’s job is to direct, right? But it seems in this film, Sunny was more the father than the director. Because how in the world can you direct your actors if you cannot see they are going wrong? He’s probably one of those dads, who see no wrong in their sons. You know, like the Bachchans who wondered why the audience was not accepting Abhishek for the great actor that he is. Sunny should have been more like Rishi Kapoor or Rakesh Roshan, who are able to criticize their sons, especially Rakesh who doesn’t mince his words.

He should have let go of his job as a director and let someone else direct the film for him. Actually, Aditya Chopra was very interested in launching Karan but Sunny refused.

If you can’t see the bad in your kid then you are not the best person to launch him. Even Dharmendra was praising Karan’s performance to the skies, which is understandable since what grandpa would badmouth his own grandson in public. Wonder what Hema Malini thought, though?

What is the story of Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas?

    Only Sunny knows!

Seriously! Watching the film taking twists and turns out of nowhere, we couldn’t help but wonder, “What in the world was that?!”. Yes, we won’t give out any spoilers, just see the film to believe it.

Summary of Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas

In short, story starts off with Karan being a guide at a tourist place up the mountains somewhere in Manali and Sahher is a vlogger who goes on to review his tourist place. They fall in love, she goes back to her place and soon he comes to see her because they are IN love. There are two kissing scenes that follow, which look super awkward. It’s like someone forced poor Karu to do this! Then the girl’s ex is a creepy guy with an influential family. Some accident happen due to the ex and the girl ends up in a coma. Karan goes Sunny’s way and gets super mad at the guy. Girl wakes up and they go back to that tourist place and live happily ever after!

There are a couple of weird stuff we failed to mention, such as the girl’s father finding an i-Pill in her bag or her ex had installed cameras in her hotel room on a vacation to catch compromising pictures of the girl. Or the fact that Karan looks super young in the first half and adult-looking in the second half. This was probably when they had to stop shooting because they ran out of money.

Overall, it’s a weird film! How in the world did they let it be this way when they spent so much money on it and especially when it’s the launch of their own kid? Should have just let Aditya Chopra take him on, instead! Mr. India has a mouth on him and wouldn’t think twice before telling the boy what he should have been told in the first place!

‘Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas’ made only 10 crore at the box office and was shunned by many famous critics for reasons best known to them. The Deols have their own fanbase, as proven by the messages on YouTube videos of this film and there was a reader here too that said she’s a fan of the Deols and was looking forward to this film. So, that’s where the 10 crore came from!

That’s it from this episode of ‘What was that!’

But as tradition, before you leave…

    1. Should the Deol’s try something else other than acting/entertainment field? As of now, looks like they haven’t had any luck. Didn’t watch the movie, thanks to this review!

    2. @admin.

I’m glad I didn’t watch it and waste 3 hours of my life. Leave alone money, I don’t even want to spare 5 minutes to watch the trailer also. The guy looks bad, that it self put me off from the beginning. People like sunny, Salman have no work n think the rest of the world are also idiots to waste money n time on them. If only they put in a little more effort to make meaningful cinema.

        1. Though we have to admit that Dharnendra and Sunny were quite good looking in their early days.

          1. Dharam paji was the best looking, then Bobby and Abhay. Sunny, we didn’t find him attractive too much maybe cause our ol’ lady crushed on him and still does! 🙄

    3. Haven’t watched this movie but boy it would be amazing to put clips of Fardeen Khan from Prem again and Karan from this movie side by side and see who did it better 😛
Main plot twist is that Fardeen got Filmfare for best debut for premagan!

      1. Fardeen when he was launched was good looking and suave. Dude was made the face of provogue back then. But yeah, he wasn’t ready and watching his debut film is such a guilty pleasure cause it’s worst than this one! 😁
