Celebrating Lagaan: Aamir Khan at the Oscars

In the past few days, the media has been celebrating ‘Lagaan’ on social media. It’s been 20 years since the first Aamir Khan production released in India and worldwide. It went on to be one of the most talked about films and probably the most acclaimed one in that year. Aamir Khan was over the moon when India decided on ‘Lagaan’ being the official entry for the Oscars’ Foreign Language Films nominations in 2002.

The most interesting thing about this was…

OK, sure it was a big deal for India and for Aamir that ‘Lagaan’ got picked up. An even bigger deal for Aamir since it was his first home production, a film in which his then-wife and now-wife were involved in the making. Also, a film where he met Jessica Hines for the first time…

    Let’s put that aside…

Back to the question…So, what was the most interesting part of the Lagaan team being at the Oscars? It was this:

Aamir Khan staring and following Julia Roberts on the red carpet

Clearly, he is a big fan so watching him follow her just so she can notice him is sweet…awkward…and embarrassing as it appeared that Julia couldn’t care less and neither did Denzel! Aamir looked like he was waiting for the right moment to say hi but Julia kept on moving and talking that all Aamir could do was follow her and stare at her until she noticed him. Sadly, that didn’t happen!

And that, kids…is why Aamir doesn’t attend the Oscars anymore!

    So ‘Lagaan’, right…

We didn’t like it too much, not that it matters. We only saw the film once and that was it. Another film that released that year got our attention, though. Guess which one?

Yep! Saw this one a gazillion times!

Kajol was on fire in K3G…Those were the good old days when special appearances could not be ruined, which made Rani Mukerji’s short stint a surprise and delight to watch on the big screen. You could hear the audience gasps once she appeared.

This is starting to sound like an appreciation post for K3G! But seriously, at that time, K3G was a full on masala entertaining film. It was fun….while ‘Lagaan’ was beyond our understanding!

By the way, it’s strange how Ashutosh and Aamir never joined hands and created something else together. Ashutosh went on to work with SRK, HR, Abhishek, Harman and even Arjun Kapoor. It’s strange because based on his outburst at that one award show, he seems to have the same seriousness and temperament as Aamir.

    Anyway, let’s go for a vote…as usual.

    1. Let’s say the truth. K3G was more entertaining! For me, Kajol was the bomb! I wish she had been more serious about her career, she proved to be really good in comedy. Srk-Kajol chemistry was awesome! Hrithik was so handsome. It was the first film I saw he and Kareena Kapoor.

Oh the good old days! Wish Karan had focused more on film-making than launching star kids.

      1. Of course, k3g was all about rich lives of rich people who don’t know what to do. Kareena and kajol never had to worry about job/education.

Lagaan had depth and sense of struggle with pain and poverty in the movie. Hence lagaan rightfully won over k3g. Lot of sports movies then began to make it’s way to theatres.

        1. Not then it didn’t. Even with all the bashing, K3G has been watched multiple times than Lagaan. Admit it, K3G is a guilty pleasure
