For the width measurement, use the same pet and measure between its shoulder blades. To allow good clearance, add 2 to 3 inches on either side.
2. Then, draw the measurements to make two sides of a square on a thick section of cardboard. Repeat on the opposite side to finish the template. The hole that you will create is the size of the dog door, so cut the opening and throw discard the cutout. To make sure the hole is suitable; get your largest pet to step through the hole. Alter the measurements on the cupboard if needed before cutting the actual opening in the door.
3. Gather the template, the pet door frame that you bought all the tools and safety glasses. Get a small stool to sit on while working, it will help you from cramping. On the bottom of the pet door, make pencil marks and then line up the template with the markings. For the remaining sides, use the template to mark whiles the sides of the frame with a level to draw. Make sure that the square is leveled as you go.
4. Next, drill a hole in each corner for starting points to cut the lines. Cut outside the pencil lines using a jigsaw to make sure you have enough room. After cutting it, push out the hole. Place the two sides of the pet door snug into opposite sides of the opening. You can use a thin wood strips to fill in any gaps between the frame and the pet door. Line up the holes and put in the screws. Finally, to make sure that your pet door is working, have a pet to go through it.
