We know we have shared quotes from celebrities before about nepotism. But this interview with Shruti Haasan is just something else, which is why we decided to share what she said with Times of India here. Shruti is something else altogether. She might be the daughter of a huge superstar and talented actor, she still acts like she doesn’t know much. Like her comments on nepotism and how she wants people to go jump a cliff whenever they bring nepotism up. She did have an easy entry in the entertainment industry and she did work hard too. The point is, she was given opportunities after even going through a series of flops. This is what nepotism is about: having it easy because you are a star kid.

 

Speaking the way she does, Shruti sounds like a brat. She also said that she’s proud of the fact that she doesn’t endorse fairness products despite her being the darkest member of her family. Like, darkest in which shade? Beige or yellow? The hell she’s talking about when she looks like her mum and dad and has their shade of colour.

Shruti got an easy entry in the movies. She started off as a singer in the South and she had the opportunity to perform on stage with big stars and AR Rahman watching her in the audience. It was like a high-school performance.

How did she end up there on stage?

Because her father is a huge star in the South.

Why would she say that nepotism doesn’t exist when it’s clear she had and has the upper hand in her career because she’s the daughter of Kamal Haasan. Her films in Bollywood haven’t worked so much, but she’s getting quite steady work in the South. Still, it’s nothing to shout about since she’s only playing flower pot roles. Perhaps when her father will stop this obsession of having to take on all the roles in his film, he can make a nice film for her that centers around her. There’s also her sister, Akshara Haasan, to think about. Shruti and her dad are working together at the moment, but we will wait until we see the film to see how big of a role she has in it. Her mother, Sarika, is still very much acting in Bollywood movies. She’s getting good roles to do now.

Shruti on how she became an actress

I was a musician before I became an actress. Though I’ve always been passionate about cinema, I never pictured myself in front of the camera. I wanted to write and maybe direct in the future, but destiny had other plans.

Today, I am my biggest fan and harshest critic, and I am here because of that. Now, when people say that they don’t like me, I turn around and tell them, ‘That’s great, have a cup of coffee by yourself’.

 

Shruti on how her father encouraged her to join films

They never insisted, but my father was the first person who encouraged me to act. He would say, ‘You would be great at it’. I wasn’t very good at it in the beginning. He said, ‘No problem. It’s because you didn’t prepare’. So, he has always been that pillar of strength.

 

Shruti on finally having her first hit in 2012

It was my biggest hit in that phase. Yes, it was a turning point because it meant that there were people who believed in me. I actually felt like I had won a vote of confidence fairly early in my career. 3 (Tamil) will also be a special film because it made me realise that when I am more collaborative with my director, my performances translate into much more than what is in the script. Landing the right film is like finding the perfect pair of jeans.

I am very proud of my surname, but my parents have never really helped me. I am the nepotistic product of anti-nepotism. In the beginning, people would say, ‘Kamal Haasan aur Sarika ki beti hai’. I had to work for years to build my career.

 

Shruti on her reaction about nepotism

When people talk about nepotism, I want to tell them, ‘Please go jump off a cliff’. Even if you are not from the industry, you will have that one person helping you — technically, even that is nepotism.

I will never endorse a fairness product because I was not comfortable growing up being the darkest person in my family. And I never want other girls or guys to feel like that.

 

Shruti on having a relationship

I have been very bad at relationships because my focus has been on work. If anyone gets in the way of my work, I ask them to leave. It’s really about finding a person who loves his job, your job, you and himself. It’s a tricky balance.
